Bridging the gap: interdisciplinary reflections and potential collaborations for preserving computer-based artworks

Presentation by Perla Innocenti

Digital artworks have questioned traditional museological approaches to documentation and preservation because of their ephemeral, documentary, technical, and multi-part nature. There are theoretical, methodological and practical problems associated with documentation, preservation, access, function, context and meaning of digital art, which require to be more systematically and scientifically addressed. Through examples of digital artworks, in this presentation Innocenti looks at methodological and organisational challenges in preserving digital art, and argues that digital art conservation could greatly benefit from the synergies with disciplines such as digital preservation and archival science, and from truly transformational collaborations between museums, libraries and archives.
